The Schulich School of Law is happy to announce the appointments of Associate Professor Sara Seck as the Director of the Maritime & Environmental Legislation Institute (MELAW) and Assistant Professor Sara Ross as the Affiliate Director.

The Institute is a world centre of excellence for analysis, instruction and outreach in oceans and surroundings legislation and policy, and the Maritime & Environmental Law Application (MELP) presents some of the world’s most extensive class offerings taught by faculty whose foremost-edge investigation and scholarship are widely cited internationally.

Sara Seck, Director 

Associate Professor Seck moved into the posture of MELAW Director on July 1, 2023, a job held for the earlier four several years by Professor David VanderZwaag, Canada Exploration Chair in Ocean Law and Governance (Tier 1). He was also the Associate Director of MELAW from 2016-2019.

As Director, Seck will organize lectures and workshops, retain and create worldwide and area investigate networks and collaborations, and help the investigate and consultancy pursuits of MELAW users. In the Associate Director role, Ross will oversee the MELP application, in which college students have a distinctive opportunity to discover about general public and private regulation apply in maritime (which includes transport) and environmental regulation taught from domestic and international views. Students wishing to focus in these fields have the option of obtaining a certificate of specialization in either Marine Law or Environmental Regulation, or both, even though completing the 3-year JD diploma.

Ross is now the co-Editor-in-Main of the Canadian Lawful Schooling Annual Evaluation and Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Law Academics. In 2022 she was the Specific Nationwide Rapporteur for “The Justiciability of Financial, Social and Cultural Legal rights in Common Law and Civil Legislation Canada” for the Global Academy of Comparative Legislation. A attorney member of the Ontario bar, amongst her six university levels she holds both a civil legislation and typical legislation diploma from the McGill College of Legislation in which she was the Editor-in-Chief of the McGill Law Journal, accomplished a certification in arbitration, and a Important in Commercial Negotiation and Dispute Resolution.
